Great to hear that if properly sealed you fell there is no performance drop. No matter which way you go to make it 2 stage ( Dust Separator) you'll spend more than you have in the used 1hp DC. So, how did it work? By having it set up in this fashion it causes a swirling/vortex affect and thus seperating the heavier shavings from sawdustif you get my drift. When it gets full, just remove the bag and throw it away (or use the sawdust for other projects!). The dust collector has a 4" opening, so you may need to step down the diameter in order to connect various tools. Only the lightest material and fine dust move on to the second stage. Have a metal top and a latch to hold it tight onto the barrel.
Regular HVAC metal pipe may work, but I don't know for sure. This creates a flexible and airtight seal. At the top is a single hose that leads to the trash can separator.
